Kallakurichi is one of the newest districts in Tamil Nadu, known for its rich agricultural background and scenic beauty. The town is often called the "Sugar Bowl of Tamil Nadu" because of its vast sugarcane cultivation and thriving agro-based industries.
Established as a separate district in 2019, Kallakurichi was carved out from Villupuram district to enhance administrative efficiency. The district is surrounded by Villupuram in the east, Salem and Dharmapuri in the west, Perambalur and Cuddalore in the south, and Tiruvannamalai in the north.
Kallakurichi is developing rapidly with improved infrastructure, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities. The region is also known for its temples and natural beauty, including hills, rivers, and green farmlands. The average temperature ranges from 20 degree Celcius in winter to 38 degree Celcius in summer, offering a typical tropical climate.
It was a town panchayat before being upgraded to a special-grade town panchayat and then a third-grade municipality in 2004. The district has an estimated population of 1,300,000 people. The filmmaker A. R. Murugadoss was born in Kallakurichi.
